Unit 1 Essay Thesis

Degas and Eggleston are comparabe artists even though each uses a different medium for their art. Both depict people in candid, simple forms. These artists also have a knack for expressing intimacy in everyday life. Eggleston and Degas seem to show undertones of desolation, sadness, and sophistication in a vernacular, relatable way.

Women that are depicted in Egglestons work are often seen as aloof and apathetic. They do not look at the camera, and if they do, they show little emotion. Men in the photos are often more emotional and seen doing more than standing in a random scene. Even dogs seem to have more animation than woman in his photos.

To decipher a "truth" behind Eggleston's art is impossible. His work is so ambiguous that there could be several truths to each photo. Eggleston plays with color, people, animals, and objects that all seem random and anonomys. Just when you think to expect something else, he suprises you with another haphazard photo of something that could be irrelevant. Because of this, I believe the truth lies in the viewer. Not the artist.
